National Corndog Day coincides with the Saturday of the final 32 teams in NCAA basketball tournament (this year it’s March 19).
This Saturday is the only day all year that one can watch a quadruple-header of college basketball games from start to finish without having to change the channel.
Therefore, to celebrate the excitement of the college basketball tournament, and have fun with friends, we eat Corndogs! Lots of Corndogs...

Brooklyn Doggers showed up!

Wow. Words cannot describe the sheer volumes consumed at this year’s NCD Brooklyn Doggers bash, but numbers can.

This year was truly one for the books. A sigh of relief was heard upon news that the quarter pound jumbo dogs of 2006 were a thing of the past and we were back to "regular-sized" dogs. Confidence ran high as a result. The big story came late in the evening after the crowd had dwindled from 80 to 20. Those who stuck around until the final buzzer got to witness history: THREE triple doubles. Only twice in our seven-year NCD history has the triple double been achieved. This was a great moment.

Leif posted first at 9:30pm with the “slow and steady wins the race” approach: one dog, tot serving and beer per hour. A small window into the feelings of a victor can be caught on this video clip -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u21Q9VOi5OE. Leif declared he’s hanging up his gloves and says he looks forward to sitting back next year and offering nuggets of wisdom to the next aspirant.

Joel posted second at 10pm with an unprecedented finish ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKlUJCN3alM ). Nearly half his triple double – 3 beers, 5 dogs and 4 tot servings – was consumed in under two hours. “I can see the light,” he said at 8pm, and then just started eating...rapidly. Amazingly, after being crowned, and in an unintentional moment of hubris, he cracked open a PBR tall boy to finish off the night.

Michael W. made it across the finish line at 10:45pm with some crowd encouragement – Ben and Liz removed excess ketchup and reheated his last six tots in the toaster oven – but not before shouting, “If I’m going down, you’re all coming with me!” And then he drooled into his cup, just to make everyone else feel kinda sick too.

Anyway, probably too graphic for some, let’s get back to the numbers. Here are the totals:

Registered Athletes: 66
Total corndogs consumed: 235 (up 17% from last year)
Total beers consumed: 268 (up 32% from last year)
Total tot servings consumed: 159 (up .6% from last year)

More photos of this great day can be found on flickr.

Thanks to all at NCD headquarters and of course Foster Farms and PBR!!! We look forward to next year.

- Neysa and Michael

Doping Controversy Hits Brooklyn NCD - Sabrica Takes Corndog Lead

Athlete Sabrica Barnett took the lead in the prestigious 'dog category, polishing off her 5th. Meanwhile, the validity of "doping" with Tums, Maalox, or appetite stimulants has the crowd buzzing. "No rules say we can't, not that I did or anything.

'Dog leader Sabrica Barnett

Tot frenzy hits NY's biggest borough - 4 O' Clock check in

Bk Tot Frenzy causes several injuries.

Fresh-Tot mania caused several scaldings as our host and chef was bum-rushed while holding a hot tin of tots. The incident separated the men from the boys, as some athletes grimaced through the pain to swallow down a fourth or fifth serving, and others felt their appetite wane from pain. Current Totals:
'Dogs - 45
Beers - 49
Tots - 49

Leading is still M. Ward, with 2-6-2, and a laser-like focus on the beer category. However, with the arrival of Tot-champion sue, with similar concentration, and several competitors with 9 points overall, his lead is in jeopardy.

Meanhwile, the bathroom door has been closed for some time . . . people are starting to talk

Cap'n - we need more heat!

BkNCD competitors are being stymied by too-slow oven tempature and Corndog/ Tot production. THIS Oven goes to ELEVEN, baby! Time to cook for real. 13 Beers (Leader with 3)

Our Lohan-style competitor was broken on the sholes of a Friday Night "Hippie Hour" Burrito Special.
My Interview with BK Tot Champion Sue

Seeking inspiration, I e-interviewed Triple-tot crown winner Susan Craine about her inspirations, techniques and drive:

> Sue, you have a unique perspective and approach to NCD (National
>Corndog Day) competition. As Tots champion for several years running, you
>are the one to beat in the potato category. Can you share a little bit
>about your goals this year?

Well this year presents a unique challenge. I am currently on a new
healthy eating plan written by a well known company that incredibly does
not include tots as one of the healthy foods. I'm going to be working
towards shattering the prejudice by retaining my title and still losing
weight this week...

>2. Do you feel that you have any significant challengers in the Tot
>category? Will you go for the overall NCD crown this year?

I've glanced at the attendee list and I'm seeing any obvious
challengers. However, I'm not forgetting that Gina Kim is now eating for
2 and may pose a significant threat. Also I'm always on the watch for
new challengers that may appear out of nowhere. Very much like
UW-Milwaukee rising up and beating Oklahoma earlier today. They killed
my bracket.

>3. What is your favorite thing about the tasty little nuggets known as the
>Tater Tot? Many top competitors say that their small size make them
>deceptive and easy to underestimate. On the other hand, it makes it a
>comfortable entry category for a lot of NCD virgins, meaning a possible
>spoiler. Do you agree?

My first word was "tot," so those tasty little numbers have always been
a part of my life. I love their crispy outside and their mushy inside. I
think they're better than corn dogs and beer.

>4. What's your feeling on the condiment controversy? A necessary lubricant
>for good competition, or unnecessary room taken up in the stomach?

Ketchup all the way. It can be especially helpful when you get a
slightly undercook tot. It makes you forget about the fact that sucker
is still frozen.

BK Corndog Workout Continues

I'm busily munching through my Gyro after a breakfast of McDonald's Sausage McMuffin - dedicated to the marraige of bread and meat. But I'm a little worried about volume - wishing that 2nd Ave. Deli hadn't closed - I could be "working out" on a 4" high pastrami sandwich. Meanwhile, my "Lohan" inspired comptetitor had four orange-flavored tic-tacs for breakfast and is licking the top of saltines for lunch. Her (IMHO naive) theory is that a hunger-inspired frenzy will allow her to finish 50% in the first hour, before her body's "full-o-meter" kicks in. This could end ugly, folks.

No Sleep 'til Corndog

A fierce debate has broken out among some BK attendees about appropriate training - While some are inspired by the legendary Kobayashi and are eating mightily in order to stretch their stomachs for the big day, some uptown folks are taking the "Lohan" approach and refusing to eat until Saturday in hopes of making more room. The tots may fly as the deadline approaches.
